PUMCH was founded by the Rockefeller Foundation in 1921. From the very beginning, it was intended to be built into the "best Medical Center in Asia". It has become a national medical guidance center designated by the National Health Commission. It is also one of the first hospitals to undertake high-level health care and medical treatment for foreign guests.
It is also a national demonstration base for higher medical education and standardized training of resident physicians, and a core base for clinical medical research and technological innovation. Over the past 99 years, the spirit of “preciseness, ever-improving, diligence, and devotion” has been passed on from generations to generations, during which a culture of compatibility also developed. PUMCH has fostered many medical pioneers and masters in modern China and generations of administrative personnel have been trained in PUMCH and spread all over China. More than ten renowned comprehensive or specialized hospitals were originated from PUMCH.
Currently, there are four campuses in PUMCH, with more than 4,000 employees, 3 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Chinese Academy of Engineering, 57 clinical and medical departments, 20 national key disciplines, 29 National Key Clinical Specialties, 22 doctoral training programs, 29 master training programs. PUMCH offers 2,000 beds, operated 53,852 cases and discharged over 110,000 patients in 2019. Specialty departments including: Cardiology, Respiratory Medicine and Critical Care, Gastroenterology, Nephrology, Hematology, Rheumatology, Infectious Disease, Oncology, etc. The hospital has a consultation center for rare diseases, offering consultation and treatment services to complex conditions including: brain metastases, pancreatic rare diseases, metabolic bone diseases, head and neck tumors, intestinal diseases, pituitary diseases, etc. There are also specialty outpatient clinics, such as Pediatric Genetics Clinic and many others.
